Fowl Cay Resort

Follow the yellow brick road

Today we said goodbye to our home and our Bahamian family, I truly treasure all our memories.

Fowl Cay is a little bit of heaven on earth that we were fortunate enough to be part of. I won’t tell you all about the ins and outs – we have to save some surprises for the guests – but it is a wonderful place, with lots of hard working people and heart!

feels like home to me

How it began…

We came here in early 2015, so stoked that Aaron and I would have the opportunity to work together again. After some time of doing long distance we needed to be together!  Looking back now it all seems like a dream, and if not for the vivid memories of fun Tuesdays off, best vacays, and experiences that allowed us to know ourselves more deeply, I would have believed it was!  However, we are now at the end of this part of our journey.

Whilst living and working at Fowl Cay, we experienced some of our happiest times, as well as some of our saddest.  To start with the latter, we had been at Fowl Cay for only a couple of weeks before we had a major boat accident.  We weren’t driving, but we were passengers on a friends boat whom we had met previously. The nights can sometimes be pitch black when there is no moon or if it is overcast, and the boat captain didn’t know the layout of the land well enough to realize that there was an entire island between where we started and our destination.  So instead of going around it, they tried to go through it. Aaron ended up the most injured with fractures to his skull and his nose, and a massive laceration that started at the middle of his forehead and went up and curve toward the middle of the top of his head. We needed to be flown out to hospital however the planes are not allowed to land at night time so we had to wait until dawn. The community was fantastic in helping stabilize Aaron. Once we reached Nassau Aaron was taken care of had surgery to staple his head back together and thank our lucky stars that he had a speedy recovery.

We became fur parents in our time at Fowl Cay to our beloved cat Sonny Boy, he really brought so much love into our life. During our time here he got sick and we had to put him down. My heart still breaks for our little Sonny. For those who know we are a bit cray we used to sing a song for him. Think of Arthurs Theme, but all the words replaced with a meow. I am pretty sure he loved it, and his ears going back was a sign of that. He was also a fan of gangster rap.

Everyone assumes because you live in paradise you have the best life, but they forget it comes with its sacrifices. Being so remote we missed out on everyday life with friends, babies, weddings, and being there for people when they are ill.

Another awesome change that happened for us is Aaron and I became vegans a while back and I coudnt think of a better place to transfer over, as it was helpful not having all the meats and treats that we used to indulge in back home, around us. That being said being vegan in the Bahamas can still be tricky.

Let me tell you about some of our favourite places.

SCYC

The famous yacht club… we have experienced one, two maybe a 100 sore heads. The yacht club has been there since the sixties, it’s a cool chilled place for a drink and some vibes. We stayed at a cottage for Aarons b-day and they are really cute, islandy yet chic inside. Downside is now we are vegans there really isn’t many options for us, so we havent been there for months. It’s a must go if you are near if only for a drink.

Compass Cay

Compass Cay is the famous home of lots of nurse sharks. Tucker and his family own the cay and its always fun to swim with the sharks. They are super tame and pose for all instagram pics 😉 There is a landing fee of $10 to step on the dock so don’t forget your cash or card! There is lots of painted memorabilia all over the walls left by visiting boats and yachts, which really adds something special. My favourite place on the cay is actually the beach along the eastern shore, it’s a crescent beach facing the ocean so the waves pump in. No matter how busy the islands are, this beach always seems empty so it’s a perfect place to take your picnic, some music and chill! Another must is the cheese burgers here! There is just something about them…

Aquarium

I am like a kid at this place, it’s a small lagoon in the National Park with hundreds of fish! It is stunning! There are all types of sea creatures such as sergeant major’s, parrot fish, yellow-tail snapper, a turtle sometimes, barracuda, and many more of different sizes and colours! Its just a magical place to snorkel and blows my mind every time! It is very fortunate the Bahamian government made the area between Compass Cay and Highbourne Cay a protected land and sea park, or all of the fish would probably have been eaten by now.

Blue Hole

This really is just a hole and you can only see it at low tide, however I just love how you’re on the beach and then there is a huge drop, occasionally you will see a stingray or turtle. I am easily pleased!

Little Farmer’s Cay

Little Farmer’s Cay is South of Fowl Cay, they have turtles here swimming around Small Bay which you can swim with. They are beautiful, but strong they will put up a good fight for some conch! It is wonderful here, however, the secret spot has now become quite known, so it can be rather busy nowadays. There are a couple of restaurant/bars on the cay such as Ocean Cabin and Ty’s. We have eaten at Ocean Cabin and really enjoyed the peas and rice cooked by Ernestine and the in-depth conversations with Terry…

Fowl Cay has really helped mold me into the person I am. It’s an isolated island so you really get to know yourself. Would I do this experience again … Absolutely!

Christmas

For any guests and staff that read this Thank you for making Bahamas our home and we are blessed to share this experience with you!
